In their words

I can guarantee you in five years that's not what it's going to look like. What it's actually going to look like, I and everyone else are really just guessing.

Our mission here at Grow, and a lot of other exciting fintechs whether it's Vancouver, Toronto or anywhere else — we're trying to create something that makes sense for our consumers.

What are the massive, massive pain points? I'm going to use this as an awesome customer feedback point — cut off the five-minute speech early and actually take some suggestions from people in the room. What do you hate most about banking?

Quick answers

Who is Kevin Sandhu?

The founder and former chief executive of Grow Technologies, the Vancouver fintech he started in 2014 with Daniel Cowx as the consumer lender Grouplend. Before founding it he spent about a decade in private equity and investment banking.

What happened to Grow?

ATB Financial acquired it in November 2019. Terms were not disclosed, and most of the team, Sandhu included, moved across to ATB. The assets included Grow's account and loan origination platform and its FinSnap financial-insights tool.

What did he tell the TechVancouver audience?

That he had been asked to predict banking in five years and did not believe anyone could — so he cut the talk short and turned it into a room-wide argument about what people hated most about their banks. His own bets were lower rates, the disappearance of fees, and banking that works whenever you want it.

What is he doing now?

Not fully established here. Vancouver's Merchant Opportunities Fund lists him on its people page as founder of Grow Technologies; the page gives him no title at the fund and carries no date, so this profile does not claim one.
