In their words

I've always been the kind of person who just thinks about what can I do what are everyday things that are a pain in my ass that I can introduce technology to make things easier

if you're gonna go to market with any type of an app like this you kind of have one shot if you go to market and it doesn't work it's a bad user experience things break payments don't work you're gonna be dead in the water

Quick answers

How did HeyBryan get its name?

Montgomery's original working name was Fast Task, but he judged that building brand recognition from scratch would cost too much. He cold-emailed HGTV contractor Bryan Baeumler through the contact form on his website; Baeumler called back the next day and signed an indefinite endorsement deal.

What did HeyBryan look like at launch?

Live in Vancouver from 16 November 2018, with about 2,500 app downloads, 580 vetted home-service experts and 135 jobs done in roughly seven weeks — a soft launch, on a team of 13 (TechVancouver stage 2019-01-23).

What is Lance Montgomery's advice to founders?

Ship only when the app actually works — one bad launch is fatal for a marketplace — and hire around your own gaps. He describes himself as good at building businesses and not a technology or marketing person, so he brought in people who were.
