In their words
I looked around the room and no one was paying attention to me, because they were all on their smartphones hidden under the table — and the execs at these companies were saying we can't reach the frontline employees, they don't have emails, they don't have access to computers.
The first one said, hey, we'll give you ten thousand dollars up front if you build this, we'll use it. I went to two others and got 5K and 5K. So: I am going to build an enterprise-grade platform with native mobile apps for ten thousand dollars, and use the other ten thousand to go to Europe.
If we could build something that had this massively positive influence on the world's largest workforce, it would really be worth risking a few years of our careers on.
Quick answers
What did Nudge do?
It was a mobile communication and task platform for frontline workers — retail floor staff, restaurant crews — who don't sit at a desk or have a work email. Lindsey Goodchild co-founded it in Toronto after watching executives say they couldn't reach staff who were all holding smartphones under the table.
What happened to Nudge?
Axonify acquired it in June 2022. Goodchild told TechTO the company had grown to about 70 people with customers worldwide by then. She joined Axonify's leadership as chief strategy officer.
How did Nudge get funded at the start?
Customers paid for it. She pitched four executives while still a consultant; one committed $10,000 up front and two more put in $5,000 each. She built the first platform on that $20,000.
