In their words

We always started raising when we didn't need any money — that's always when banks and investors like to give you money, is when you don't need it. But give yourself at least six months, because it gives you two kicks at the can. A raise cycle is about three months, so six months gives you two shots: one for failing, the other for succeeding.

What I've learned is that I'm a startup guy — that's how I've done 13 companies. I am not a scale-up person. So very early on in my startup I found my successor. I built a succession plan. I found a new CEO who would one day replace me.

Whatever you measure is what gets done. So when I asked my people to go and find customers, we found customers. When I asked them for bookings, we got bookings. When I asked them for unit economics, I got unit economics.

Quick answers

Who is Marc Castel?

A co-founder of Fiix Software, the Toronto CMMS company acquired by Rockwell Automation in December 2020. He was Fiix's CEO until July 2018 and then its executive chair. He describes himself as a startup guy who has done 13 companies, across SaaS, music and wine.

Did Marc Castel found Fiix Software?

He co-founded it — he was one of several founders, not the sole one. TechTO's 2019 talk title calls him 'Founder of Fiix Software'; Fiix's own CEO announcement and BetaKit's reporting both use 'co-founder'.

Why did Marc Castel stop being CEO of Fiix?

By his own account it was planned. He says he is a startup person rather than a scale-up person, so he recruited his successor early and built a succession plan. James Novak, then president and COO, became CEO in July 2018 and Castel moved to executive chair.

What happened to Fiix Software?

Rockwell Automation announced the acquisition on 17 November 2020 and closed it in December 2020. Fiix still operates as a Rockwell Automation company.

How many times has Marc Castel spoken at TechTO?

Twice — 'It's All About People' in November 2018, and Raise of the Month in May 2019, where he broke down how Fiix raised US$52M in twelve months.
