FemtechTorontoOn TechTO stages since 2025

Melissa Gallagher is co-founder and CEO of Alma Care, which delivers in-home postpartum care across Ontario — night nursing, lactation consulting, postnatal massage and doula support. She started it after her first daughter's birth in 2022 showed her how little follow-up care Canadian mothers get. It began as a postnatal retreat and moved primarily in-home.

Quick answers

What problem is Alma Care solving?

Gallagher told TechTO in October 2025 that Canadian postpartum care amounts to roughly a six-week check-in for the mother, that about one in four women experience postpartum depression, and that fewer than a third of them get treatment.

Why did Alma move from a retreat to in-home care?

Reach. Gallagher said the retreat could only support a small number of families at a time; in-home care scaled, and it is what she used herself after her second daughter. Alma went from Toronto to the GTA to all of Ontario inside a year.

How does Alma measure outcomes?

Standard mental-health screening — she named the PHQ-9 — plus weekly check-ins against each family's own goals, as she described on the TechTO stage.
