AITorontoOn TechTO stages since 2020

Olivier Berger co-founded Wondeur AI in Toronto with Sophie Perceval, building models that price risk on art and other alternative assets for insurers and wealth managers. An engineer from France who had already run an AI company applied to the stock market, he frames the problem plainly: assets nobody can value cannot be insured, lent against or sold.

In their words

It's an important problem because it's impacting about 1.8 trillion dollars of art assets. So it's a gigantic market, and most of those assets can't transact because nobody understands the value and how value changes.

Most of these assets can't be leveraged, because you don't understand the values — you can't lend against, you can't do a risk profile on it. And they can't be properly insured, because you don't understand the risk level.

CDL has been an extraordinary experience, because it's all about the exposure to great investors. The exposure is immediate, it's strong, and if you have a couple of believers in the audience that follow you every six weeks, then it accelerates your ability to meet the right people for the funding that you need.

Quick answers

Who is Olivier Berger?

A co-founder of Wondeur AI, the Toronto company that models risk on the value of art and other alternative assets. He trained as an engineer in France, worked across the financial industry in several countries, and was chief executive of an earlier AI company applied to the stock market before starting Wondeur AI with Sophie Perceval.

What did Olivier Berger say on the TechTO stage?

That roughly US$1.8 trillion of art assets sit stuck — under-insured, un-lent-against and untraded — because nobody can defend a value for them, and that this, not connoisseurship, is the market Wondeur AI is built for. He also rated Creative Destruction Lab well above DMZ for investor exposure.

How was Wondeur AI's first round raised?

Mostly from angels, many met through Creative Destruction Lab. Eva Lau of Two Small Fish Ventures, then investing as an angel, worked to assemble a lead and a full angel round before writing her own cheque, which is how the round came together.
