Wondeur AI

Wondeur AI is a Toronto research company that models risk on the value of art and other alternative assets. Its WOND-A systems read non-transactional market signals — museum and gallery endorsements, publications, influence networks — rather than auction results alone, and are used by insurers and wealth managers in nine countries to price and monitor assets at scale.

About

Sophie Perceval and Olivier Berger built Wondeur AI on a contrarian reading of the art market: what looks irrational from the outside is a self-regulating system whose price movements can be described and predicted. On the TechTO stage in 2020 Berger put the stakes in balance-sheet terms — roughly US$1.8 trillion of art assets that mostly cannot transact, be lent against or be properly insured, because nobody can defend a value for them. The company's answer is to refuse auction data as the primary signal. Perceval and Berger argued from the stage that repeat auction transactions cover only about 3,000 of some 250,000 artists, and the company now says auction results are under 0.1% of the data needed to grasp an asset's value dimensions. Instead its models track endorsements, publications, movements and the influence networks of tens of thousands of market participants across more than a century. The current systems are branded WOND-A and sold to insurers and wealth managers rather than to collectors; the company says its client roster spans nine countries and two continents, that 85% of its spending goes to research, and that it has co-published research with UBS, Generali and Deloitte. It is headquartered at 215 Spadina Avenue in Toronto, with researchers in six cities across North America and Europe, and has run a co-creation programme it calls the Wondeur LAB since 2022.

Backers

The first round was mostly angels, many of them met through Creative Destruction Lab. Eva Lau of Two Small Fish Ventures told the TechTO audience she was an angel at the time and would not write a cheque without a lead, so she worked to assemble the round before investing — 'I was basically telling everyone my check was ready.' TechTO's Founders & Funding episode pairs the company with Two Small Fish as the investor that made the bet.

Quick answers

What does Wondeur AI do?

It models risk on the value of art and other alternative assets. Its WOND-A systems analyse non-transactional signals — endorsements by galleries and museums, publications, and influence networks — to explain and forecast how value moves, and sell that analysis to insurers and wealth managers rather than to collectors.

Why doesn't Wondeur AI just use auction results?

Because the founders argue auction data is both thin and misleading. On the TechTO stage they said only about 3,000 of roughly 250,000 artists transact at auction in a repeat way, and that the prices that do exist are shaped by financial engineering and a fragmented market. The company now puts auction results at under 0.1% of the data required.

Who founded Wondeur AI?

Sophie Perceval and Olivier Berger, who met in Toronto — both French, and, as Perceval told TechTO, both initially trying to avoid working with French people. Perceval came from economics and the contemporary art world; Berger is an engineer who had already run an AI company applied to the stock market.

Where is Wondeur AI based?

Toronto, at 215 Spadina Avenue. The company says its researchers are spread across six cities in North America and Europe, and that it deploys through partnerships in the US and Europe.
