About

Able Innovations is a Toronto medical robotics company founded in 2018 by Jayiesh Singh and Phil Chang. Its ALTA Platform automates lateral patient transfer — the routine, physically punishing task of moving a non-ambulatory patient between a bed, a stretcher and an imaging table. Done manually it takes four or five people, risks back injury for staff, and is undignified for the patient; ALTA lets one caregiver do it without contact. Singh's mother works in long-term care and was injured repeatedly moving residents, which is where the company came from. The device has been deployed with health providers in Ontario, Nova Scotia and British Columbia. Singh told the TechTO stage in August 2025 that investors could not price a market whose incumbent product is a bedsheet, so the company bootstrapped instead of raising venture capital.

Backers

Able Innovations is bootstrapped rather than venture-backed. Its first research study was funded by AGE-WELL, Canada's technology-and-aging network. Singh said on the TechTO stage in August 2025 that VCs could not size the market, so he chose not to raise.

Quick answers

What does Able Innovations do?

It builds the ALTA Platform, a robotic device that transfers non-ambulatory patients between beds, stretchers and imaging tables without anyone lifting them. One caregiver operates it instead of the four or five people a manual transfer usually needs.

Who founded Able Innovations?

Jayiesh Singh and Phil Chang, in Toronto in 2018. Singh, a University of Toronto mechanical engineer, is CEO; he spent eight years at Morgan Solar before starting the company.

Is Able Innovations venture-backed?

No — it is bootstrapped. Singh has said investors could not evaluate a market where the incumbent alternative is a disposable sheet, and that chasing venture capital as validation was the wrong goal.
