Through The Next 36 entrepreneurship program. U of T News reported in April 2015 that Chen, an engineering science alumnus, met Joshua Liu and Willie Kwok there, and that the idea was incubated at U of T's Innis College, where the team worked for its first eight months.

He told U of T News in April 2015 that he learned about entrepreneurship in Professor Emeritus Joseph Paradi's courses, then started Social Spark at the University of Toronto and Western University to encourage young people to build social ventures.
