About

Founded in 2012 out of the Next 36 program, SeamlessMD gives patients step-by-step care plans, reminders and progress tracking on their phones, and gives clinicians alerts, monitoring and analytics in return. It built its position by focusing on surgery when other patient-engagement companies chased chronic disease, and by anchoring itself to enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) — a model CEO Joshua Liu told the TechTO stage in 2017 he expected to become the standard of care.

Quick answers

What does SeamlessMD do?

It gives patients a digital care plan on their phone for a treatment journey such as surgery — reminders, education and progress tracking — while care teams get alerts, remote monitoring and analytics. Hospitals and health systems are the buyers.

Who founded SeamlessMD?

Joshua Liu, Philip Chen and Willie Kwok, in 2012, after meeting through the Next 36 program. Liu is still CEO and Kwok is still CTO.

Why did SeamlessMD focus on surgery?

Deliberate contrarianism. Liu told the TechTO stage in 2017 that every other patient-engagement company was focused on chronic disease, so 'when everyone was going right, we decided to go left' — a bet on surgery he called one of the best decisions the company ever made.
