About
Akira was founded in Toronto in 2015 by Dustin Walper, Taha Bandukwala and Matt Zukowski to give patients video and text access to clinicians through a mobile app, later paired with tech-enabled in-person clinics. Walper told TechTO in September 2016 that he had chosen healthcare deliberately, on the reasoning that Canada ranks poorly in international comparisons of health systems despite how central healthcare is to Canadian identity, and that the right kind of problem is one millions of people care about but that looks intractably hard. Right Health acquired the company in 2017 and adopted the Akira name; TELUS Health then acquired Akira in 2019, finalising the deal on 8 August, and folded it into TELUS Health Virtual Care.
