About
Associated Medical Services was established in 1937 by Dr Jason Hannah as Canada's first physician-sponsored, not-for-profit prepaid health care organisation — an early answer to the question of how ordinary people paid for medicine. It left the prepaid insurance business in 1972, and has run since as a self-funded charity on the income from those original subscriber funds.
What it funds now is the human side of a technological healthcare system. Its stated aim is a Canadian healthcare system "advanced by innovation and technology while remaining rooted in compassion and our medical history." Programmes include Fellowships in Compassion and Artificial Intelligence, the AMS-Fitzgerald Fellowship in AI and Human-Centered Leadership — a two-year fellowship run with the Dalla Lana School of Public Health for early- and mid-career health system leaders — Compassion and Artificial Intelligence grants, and History of Healthcare awards worth up to $70,000 for post-doctoral fellows. Zayna Khayat, who has a profile here, is chief program officer and leads the AI and compassion programmes.
