When I first came to Canada I only had these two briefcases. After I graduated I moved around different places in London, Ontario, and I could use a supermarket shopping cart to move my stuff.

Bitcoin fundamentally solves two problems. One is the trust problem that we have in the financial industry, and the other is the transfer of value. The internet doesn't really transfer value — it transfers data.

Quick answers

Who is Ross Zhang?

The general manager who launched Huobi's Canadian operation. Bitcoin Magazine reported the Toronto office in May 2018 with Zhang at the helm, quoting him that "even though we started in China in 2013, we are a Canadian company — we want to be as local as possible." In an Investing.com Q&A the same month he set out a compliance-first plan and called a sustainable business more important than fast growth.

What was his TechTO talk about?

His own route into fintech rather than a company pitch. He traced it from writing Oracle E-Business Suite code in China, through a master's in computer science at Western, to wealth-management software, CIBC, Ontario Teachers' and CPPIB's total fund management group — and then to why Bitcoin pulled him out of pensions and into building an exchange from scratch.

What happened to Huobi in Canada?

The exchange withdrew services from Canadian users through December 2021. Huobi itself rebranded to HTX in September 2023, following a change of ownership widely reported to involve Tron founder Justin Sun.

What is Ross Zhang doing now?

Not established. A Huobi post from December 2021 describes him as head of marketing for Huobi Group, and contact-data aggregators list a later marketing role elsewhere, but no citable source establishes what he does today and this page does not publish from aggregators.
