About
Huobi was among the largest crypto exchanges in the world when it announced a Canadian expansion at EDCON in Toronto in May 2018, promising a fully operational Toronto office and access for Canadian blockchain startups to its capital, ecosystem fund and consulting arms. Ross Zhang — a developer by training who had worked at Oracle in China and then CIBC and Ontario Teachers' in Toronto — ran it as general manager and told FintechTO in September 2018 that he wanted to bring a two-country perspective to the market. The Canadian operation did not last: the exchange phased out services for Canada-based users through December 2021, disabling all account functions except viewing and withdrawal on 31 December. In September 2023 the exchange rebranded to HTX on its tenth anniversary.
Backers
Founded and controlled by Leon Li. Reporting says he sold a controlling stake in late 2022 to About Capital Management, an investment firm linked to Tron founder Justin Sun, who has since been publicly associated with the exchange.
