About
Allbirds is a San Francisco company that makes footwear and apparel from renewable natural materials, starting with merino wool running shoes and expanding into other materials. It was co-founded in 2016 by Tim Brown, a New Zealander and former professional footballer who launched the idea via Kickstarter, and Joey Zwillinger, who came from clean-tech venture and biotech. The company went public on the Nasdaq under the ticker BIRD in 2021 at a roughly $4 billion valuation. Zwillinger discussed the company at a TechTO Retail fireside in June 2020, including a pre-mortem exercise where the first seven employees wrote the company's ten-year success story, and Allbirds' choice to open-source a sugar-cane-derived midsole material rather than patent it. Zwillinger stepped down as CEO in 2024; Joe Vernachio became CEO.
Backers
Publicly traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker BIRD since its 2021 IPO; earlier a venture-backed direct-to-consumer brand.
