Airzai

Airzai is a Toronto consumer-hardware company that makes app-controlled home fragrance diffusers and interchangeable scent pods, sold as a waterless alternative to reed diffusers and candles. Brothers Muneeb and Nabeel Mushtaq run it, after building the home-services marketplace AskforTask, and its first device was designed by Fred Bould.

About

Airzai's product is a smart diffuser: a device that takes sealed scent pods, is scheduled and dimmed from a phone app, and needs no water or cleaning. The company describes it as "the world's first AI-powered diffuser backed by neuroscience" and sells pods, interchangeable sleeves and sets alongside the hardware. Its first product, Airzai Aroma, launched in November 2019 and was designed by Fred Bould, the industrial designer behind Nest's connected-home devices, the GoPro camera and Roku. Muneeb Mushtaq is co-founder and chief executive and his brother Nabeel is co-founder and chief product officer; the company's own site says it "was founded by three Canadian entrepreneurs" without naming the third. Muneeb had earlier started AskforTask from a University of Toronto dorm room in 2012 with Nabeel, growing the home-services marketplace to more than 100 Canadian cities — the company he spoke about at TechTO in July 2018. Airzai names Drake, Scotia Capital, OV2 Capital and ADG Investments as backers on its own site.

Backers

Drake, Scotia Capital, OV2 Capital and ADG Investments are named as backers on Airzai's own site. Round sizes have been quoted in founder interviews but never in a company announcement, so no amount is carried here.
