About
Amplify Capital started life inside the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto as the MaRS Catalyst Fund, launched in 2016 with $5.8 million — $5 million private and $800,000 from the Ontario government. It rebranded to Amplify Capital while raising a $30 million second fund, and describes its focus as the industries that do not have easy answers: technical, regulated, harder to get right. It groups its investing into three areas — climate, health, and work — and its portfolio includes Hydrostor, the long-duration compressed-air energy storage company, Inkblot, acquired by Green Shield, and Endor Health. Kathryn Wortsman is founder and managing partner; Craig Hunter, who presented at TechTO in 2015 while running Bitmaker Labs, is a partner. The firm reports about $42 million under management across 22 portfolio companies and five exits, with offices in Toronto and Montreal.
Backers
A fund rather than an operating company. Fund I's $800,000 government tranche came from the Province of Ontario; the balance of its limited partners is not published.

Early-stage technology companies across three areas it names as climate, health and work — the energy and industrial systems underneath what comes next, care delivery, and the platforms changing how people learn and earn.
Was it always called Amplify Capital?
No. It launched in 2016 as the MaRS Catalyst Fund, incubated at Toronto's MaRS Discovery District, and took the Amplify Capital name while raising its $30 million second fund.
What is in the portfolio?
Companies named on its own site and in founder testimonials include Hydrostor, which builds long-duration energy storage, Inkblot, acquired by Green Shield, and Endor Health.
