About
a16z's founding thesis, in its own words, was "a single conviction: software would eat the world, and the biggest tech companies would become far more valuable than anyone believed." Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz started the firm in 2009; it reports over $100 billion under management across multiple funds as of 30 April 2026.
What distinguished it operationally was the platform model — the firm says it built the largest team of operators in venture, covering marketing, talent, legal and policy, to support founders at every stage, and staffed its investing team with ex-founders and operators rather than career financiers.
Its investing is organised into focus areas: AI, American Dynamism, Bio + Health, Consumer, Crypto, the Cultural Leadership Fund, Enterprise, Fintech, Growth, Infrastructure, Perennial and Speedrun. Alongside the funds it runs programmes including Speedrun for early-stage founders, a16z Build, and a College Talent programme, and publishes heavily through newsletters, a podcast network and books.
The firm has offices in Menlo Park (2865 Sand Hill Road), San Francisco, New York, Washington DC, Santa Monica, Seoul and Tokyo.
Backers
A venture firm rather than an operating company; its capital comes from limited partners, whom it does not name publicly.
