About

The Business Development Bank of Canada is a Crown corporation wholly owned by the federal government and mandated to finance and advise Canadian businesses. BDC Capital is its investment arm, and the single largest and most active venture investor in the country. It works on several fronts at once: direct investment across the full range from seed to growth equity, indirect investment as a limited partner in Canadian venture funds, and specific government mandates. Assets under management were close to CAD $7 billion in 2024, and it has committed nearly $1 billion in new funds aimed at late-stage technology companies. Two people in this directory work there — Alroy Almeida, an associate principal, and Olga Cruz, director of the Thrive Lab, who joined a Health Toronto fireside in March 2026 on what impact investing actually looks for.
