About
Biba turned ordinary playground equipment into a game board: an app pointed at the slides and climbers a child is already standing on, with augmented-reality games designed to make them run. CEO Matt Toner told the TechVancouver stage in March 2019 that the company had reached about 4,500 locations, mostly across the southern United States where childhood obesity is most acute, on a team of fifteen — and had just turned a profit, which he noted his investors liked rather more than growth alone. That year TIME listed Biba among its Best Inventions and Fast Company named it one of its most innovative companies. Toner has since co-founded the Vancouver venture firm Shred Capital.

Quick answers
What does Biba make?
Augmented-reality games played on real playground equipment. Parents open the app at the playground and it turns the structure the child is already on into a game, to encourage physical rather than screen play.
How big did Biba get?
About 4,500 playground locations worldwide on a team of fifteen, and profitable, as CEO Matt Toner described on the TechVancouver stage in March 2019.
Who ran Biba Ventures?
Matt Toner was CEO. He described it as his second high-quality startup after earlier ventures that, in his words, crashed and burned. He has since co-founded Shred Capital.
