About

BioRender started when co-founder Shiz Aoki, a scientific illustrator, and her co-founders realized biology had no standard visual language — researchers were drawing figures by hand in PowerPoint or waiting on the roughly 30 trained science illustrators graduating each year. The company went through Y Combinator in early 2018 (W18), returned to Toronto, and built a drag-and-drop tool and icon library that scientists use to make publication-ready figures. It has been profitable since 2019 and, as co-founder Ryan Marien told the TechTO stage in February 2026, has grown roughly 70-100x since reaching profitability.

Backers

Y Combinator (W18) and a Series A in June 2023. Largely bootstrapped and profitable since 2019; a December 2025 secondary led by Dimension Capital valued the company at $900M.
