About
Mike Bignold built the first version to fix his own contracting company's quoting problem, then turned it into a product. He told TechTO's Founders & Funding session in December 2021 that Calgary investors laughed at a $2M raise on a $15M valuation and told him to go to Silicon Valley — so he spent his last $1,500 on the trip, cold-called Sand Hill Road, and ended up in Y Combinator, where FUSE invested before demo day. The company later rebranded from CostCertified to Bolster.
Backers
FUSE (Brendan Wales) invested out of Y Combinator, as described by both parties on the TechTO stage in December 2021. Other investors not verified for this page.
Quick answers
What does Bolster do?
Software for residential construction: interactive estimating, scheduling, project management and payments, so a contractor can sell a renovation the way an online store sells a product.
Is Bolster the same company as CostCertified?
Yes. It was founded as CostCertified and later rebranded to Bolster. The 2021 TechTO recording is under the old name.
How did Bolster get funded?
Through Y Combinator. Bignold described being turned down in Calgary, flying to the Bay Area on his last $1,500, and meeting FUSE's Brendan Wales through an introduction partway through the YC batch — the deal closed before demo day.
