About

Patel founded BuildScience after a friend asked for help building software for buildings — the 'yes' his 2016 TechTO talk is named after. The product, Strata, centralised the separate control systems in a large commercial building so a property manager could run them from one place. It was accepted to Y Combinator in 2015. The company is not actively trading; writing in January 2023, Patel listed relaunching it among his longer-term plans.

Quick answers

What did BuildScience do?

It centralised a commercial building's separate control systems — HVAC, lighting, access, metering — into a single API and interface, so operators could manage them from one place.

Was it a Y Combinator company?

Yes, accepted in 2015. TechCrunch covered the platform that March.

Is it still operating?

No. Patel now runs the consultancy Pulsecode, and has described relaunching BuildScience as a future plan rather than a current business.
