Buckzy

Buckzy is a Toronto fintech that moves money across borders in real time — a payment network plus banking-as-a-service that financial institutions, marketplaces and other fintechs build on rather than a consumer app of its own.

About

Founded in 2018, Buckzy sells the plumbing of instant international payments: connections into domestic real-time payment networks and emerging rails such as virtual wallets, wrapped in more than 200 APIs covering digital onboarding, sanctions screening, messaging, settlement and foreign exchange. Its customers are banks, payment service providers and marketplaces, which take the modules they lack — some hand over compliance screening, some use Buckzy's liquidity and FX in exotic corridors while keeping their own in markets where they already have banks. The company is registered as a money services business with FINTRAC in Canada and as an authorised payment institution with the FCA in the United Kingdom. Michele Poole, then its global head of customer experience, described the model on TechTO's FintechTO stage in May 2019: an ecosystem others can build on, sold as a win-win to institutions whose legacy systems make the same capability slow and expensive to build.

Backers

Buckzy names Dash40, Mistral Venture Partners, Revel Partners and Uncorrelated Ventures as investors on its own about page. BetaKit reports Luge Capital and Blue 9 Capital also joined the December 2022 Series A.

Quick answers

What does Buckzy do?

It runs a real-time cross-border payment network and a banking-as-a-service platform, sold to financial institutions, marketplaces and fintechs as modules they can assemble — onboarding, sanctions screening, network connectivity, settlement, FX — rather than as a finished consumer product.

Does Buckzy use cryptocurrency?

No. Poole was asked this directly at FintechTO in May 2019 and said the company uses blockchain to manage the ledger behind its multi-currency business wallets, but not cryptocurrency, because the financial institutions it sells to are uncomfortable partnering with crypto fintechs.

How is it different from Wise?

Her answer in May 2019: no transfer fee, and no primary focus on selling direct to consumers — Buckzy partners with institutions and lets them keep the pieces they are strong at, building its own connections behind strategic partners rather than reselling existing rails.

Who from Buckzy is in this directory?

Michele Poole, its global head of customer experience at the time, who presented at TechTO's FintechTO in May 2019. She now runs DeepPoole Advisory.
