About

Matias Marquez started Buyatab in 2008 while a student at Simon Fraser University, aged 21. The company sells the machinery behind a brand's own gift cards rather than a consumer marketplace: a merchant's website sells the card, Buyatab handles purchase, fraud, email and text delivery, and compatibility with Apple Wallet and Google Pay. Marquez told the TechVancouver stage in March 2016 that the company powered programs for hundreds of brands across North America and Europe, naming Tim Hortons among them, and spent most of the talk on technical debt — what it is, why any scaling company accumulates some, and how to judge when taking it on is the right call. Stored Value Solutions, a US gift card processor, acquired Buyatab on 19 February 2019; the Buyatab brand continues to operate under that ownership.
