About
ConsenSys was started in November 2014 by Joseph Lubin, a co-founder of Ethereum, and describes itself as "a global blockchain company focused on building and scaling tools and enterprise software products powered by Ethereum". Its products sit at several layers of that stack at once: MetaMask, the wallet and browser extension most people use to hold Ethereum assets; Infura, the API that lets applications reach the network without running their own node; the Truffle developer toolkit; Linea, a zkEVM layer-2; and Consensys Diligence for smart-contract security. It has since added consumer products including the MetaMask Card and a MetaMask stablecoin.
The company says it employs more than 700 technologists, designers, cryptographers, product thinkers and researchers, and supports millions of users and thousands of developers. It raised a $450 million Series D in March 2022.
Henry Chan brought the argument to the TechTO stage in December 2017, and framed blockchain in Innovator's-Dilemma terms — disruptive because it can be an order of magnitude more efficient than the status quo, starting in a market incumbents ignore and moving up. His worked example was buying a share in Canada: know-your-customer checks taking a business day or two, three business days to move money into a trading account, and three more for clearing and settlement, against a blockchain settlement he put at fourteen seconds. He then had the room open uPort, ConsenSys's self-sovereign identity wallet, and walk through attesting a claim about themselves.
Backers
Venture-backed. The company states a $450 million Series D in March 2022 on its own timeline; it does not name the investors on the pages read here, so none are listed.
