About
Flow was designed by the people who built CryptoKitties, after that game congested Ethereum and made the case for a chain that ordinary consumers could use. Dapper Labs launched the network in 2020 and NBA Top Shot became its first mass-market application. In 2024 the Flow Foundation was constituted as a separate non-profit so the network's direction would not sit inside a single company; Dapper Labs agreed to surrender its remaining FLOW token balance to the foundation. Flow's own material describes a purpose-built layer-one that splits consensus from execution across specialised node roles — which is how it claims MEV resistance and horizontally scalable throughput without rollups — and runs an EVM-equivalent environment alongside Cadence, the resource-oriented smart-contract language the CryptoKitties team wrote. The network's stated partners include the NBA, Disney, Ticketmaster and PayPal, and the foundation now frames Flow as a home for consumer DeFi. Dieter Shirley, who co-authored the ERC-721 NFT standard and was Dapper Labs' CTO until January 2024, is its chief system architect.
