About

Cryptiv was founded in Toronto in 2014 by Mat Cybula and Geoffrey Byers, and built an enterprise wallet system: the key management, access controls and permissions a bank or exchange needs before it can hold customer crypto. It sold to institutions rather than to consumers, which in 2016 was an unfashionable position. Cybula argued the case on the TechTO stage twice — in July 2016 on money itself, and at FintechTO in February 2017 on whether blockchain was a sustaining or a disruptive innovation. The Canadian exchange Coinsquare acquired Cryptiv in 2019 and the company no longer operates independently. Cybula is now chief executive of TenX Protocols, a Toronto digital-asset treasury company listed on the TSX Venture Exchange.
