Kyle Campbell started the company as Hack Capital, pitching it as software to help digital companies hire, train and motivate engineers. Its CTO.ai product — which measured how fast a team shipped to production and gave developers shortcuts inside Slack and the CLI — became the business, and the company took its name. Campbell presented on the TechVancouver stage in March 2018, as Hack Capital, on the unglamorous work that goes into an "overnight success." He had earlier founded Retsly, a real-estate data API acquired by Zillow in 2014.
