About
Mashape was founded in 2009 by Augusto Marietti and Marco Palladino, initially as a mash-up platform for assembling functions from third-party services. Working with those APIs led the founders to build a hub for them instead: Mashape appeared online in alpha in November 2010, entered private beta in June 2011, and within a couple of years was the largest API marketplace in the world. In 2015 the company open-sourced an API gateway called Kong, which found faster adoption than the marketplace; in 2017 Mashape sold the marketplace product to RapidAPI and renamed itself Kong Inc. that October. Ahmad Nassri, then a Toronto-based engineer at Mashape, took the TechTO stage in July 2015 to talk about open development methodology — the same year Kong was released. He has since been CTO at npm and is now at Socket.

Mashape took angel funding in 2010 and a US$1.5-million seed the following year; as Kong Inc. it went on to raise substantially more.
