About
Ryan Doherty was halfway through a PhD in medical biophysics doing drug-discovery research when he worked out that the timeline to impact there was measured in decades and the timeline for a health app was months. He met technical co-founders at Toronto meetups and built iamsick.ca: find the nearest open pharmacy right now, or the nearest health professional who speaks your language — a feature used in partnership with public health for Syrian refugees. The company later added family-doctor and walk-in appointment booking and pharmacy flu-shot booking, and now trades as Empower Health.

Quick answers
What does Empower Health do?
It runs iamsick.ca, which helps Canadians find nearby open clinics and pharmacies — including by language spoken — and book appointments with family doctors, walk-in clinics and pharmacists.
Why is it also called iamsick.ca?
iamsick.ca is the original name and the consumer-facing product; the company itself is Empower Health. Its TechTO talk in November 2016 was billed under the old name.
Who founded it?
Ryan Doherty, who started it while partway through a PhD in medical biophysics, with co-founders he met at Toronto tech meetups who brought the engineering.
