About

Chris Horlacher co-founded Equibit Group in Toronto in 2015 and served as chairman and CEO. The idea was to do for securities what Bitcoin did for money: register and transfer equity and debt directly between issuers and investors on an independent proof-of-work blockchain, cutting out central depositories and transfer agents and settling in real time rather than the industry's three days. A 'Trading Passport' handled the compliance problem, using cryptographic verification to keep private shares circulating only among qualified investors. Equibit ran one of Canada's first ICO crowdsales, raising roughly $570,000 USD in cash and coins. Horlacher presented the thesis at FintechTO in April 2017. The company ceased operating; Horlacher left the CEO role in 2019.

How was Equibit different from Bitcoin?

It ran as its own permissionless proof-of-work blockchain designed for securities rather than currency, settling trades in real time instead of the standard three days, and layering on a 'Trading Passport' so private shares stayed within qualified-investor networks.

Is Equibit still operating?

No. The company is no longer active and Chris Horlacher left the CEO role in 2019.
