About

BitGold was founded in 2014 by Roy Sebag and Josh Crumb to let people hold and spend gold as money — vaulted allocated gold with a payments layer on top, including a Mastercard that spent from a gold balance. It went public on the TSX Venture Exchange in May 2015, acquired the older Goldmoney business the same year, moved up to the Toronto Stock Exchange in April 2016, and rebranded fully to Goldmoney in May 2016 after passing a million users. Darrell MacMullin, then leading the company's payments side, spoke at TechTO in July 2016 with the numbers roughly thirteen months after listing: a valuation that had reached about $200 million overnight on listing, over a million users across more than 150 countries, a market capitalisation of about $400 million, and — his point to the room — less than 6% of the business in Canada, built with no marketing spend outside two countries. He also made the case that Toronto did not need a million startups so much as a thousand successful ones and a hundred great ones.

Quick answers

What does Goldmoney do?

It lets customers buy, hold and in some cases spend allocated precious metals held in vaults, with a payments layer over the top — precious metals used as savings and, historically, as a spendable balance.

Was Goldmoney always called that?

No. It was founded as BitGold in 2014, listed in May 2015, acquired the older Goldmoney business that year, and adopted the Goldmoney name in May 2016 after passing one million users.

Is Goldmoney public?

Yes — it trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange under XAU, having moved up from the TSX Venture Exchange in April 2016.
