About
Hyperwallet built global payout infrastructure: the plumbing that lets a marketplace or gig platform send money to thousands of sellers, drivers or freelancers across borders and currencies. Lisa Shields founded it in Vancouver in 2000 and stepped down as chief executive in 2015, going on to found FISPAN the following year. PayPal announced its agreement to acquire the company in June 2018 and confirmed completion on 15 November 2018 at approximately $400 million USD in cash, folding Hyperwallet's payout capability into its own suite for e-commerce platforms and marketplaces. Shields returned to the TechVancouver stage in April 2019 alongside Dennis Pilarinos of Buddybuild, which Apple had bought in 2018, for a conversation about what selling a company actually involves — how the process runs, what changes for the team, and what they wished they had known going in.
Backers
Acquired outright by PayPal in 2018. Earlier institutional backing is not published here because no primary source was verified.
