About
Indigo Books & Music is the largest book retailer in Canada, operating under the Indigo, Chapters and Coles banners and online at indigo.ca. Heather Reisman founded it in Toronto in 1996; it merged with Chapters in 2001 to become the country's dominant bookseller. Over the following two decades the company reworked itself around a broader 'cultural department store' idea, adding home, wellness and lifestyle merchandise to books, and expanded into the United States. Jules Cowan-Dewar, who was vice-president of marketing during that Canadian growth and US expansion, took TechTO's MarketingTO stage in April 2019 to walk through digital transformation in retail as hits and misses — her successes and her failures — rather than as a success story. She left the following year to become vice-president of sales and marketing at Cabot, where she is now chief marketing officer.
