Instacart connects shoppers to retailers' inventory and dispatches personal shoppers to pick and deliver the order. Apoorva Mehta, Max Mullen and Brandon Leonardo founded it in 2012 and joined Y Combinator's summer 2012 batch; Mehta met both co-founders through YC. The company went public on Nasdaq in September 2023 under the ticker CART. Mullen presented at TechTO in September 2018 on what the company learned growing demand faster than it could serve it, and moved out of his day-to-day role into an advisory seat in April 2026 after thirteen years.
