About
Kartera built a real-time payment rail on top of US bank ledgers so merchants can take money straight from a customer's account. Founder Nabi Awada told the TechTO stage in November 2024 that the company began as banking-as-a-service — card issuance and account opening for other startups — and only found its product when it realised the atypical real-time settlement it had forced its banking partner to support was the thing customers wanted. Everything else was scrapped.

Quick answers
What does Kartera do?
It settles payments directly between US bank accounts in real time, so merchants pay about 1% instead of card-network fees, and it rewards debit users for paying that way.
Who founded Kartera?
Nabi Awada, previously Global Chief Product Officer at Rappi and a product principal at Revolut and Monzo. He is based in Vancouver.
Does Kartera operate in Canada?
Not yet. Awada told TechTO in November 2024 that six months of trying to sign a Canadian bank went nowhere, that he moved to the US and had a contract two weeks later, and that Canada is on the plan.
