About

Keyhole started in 2009 as a hashtag-tracking tool and grew into a social listening and analytics product used by marketing and communications teams to measure mentions, hashtags, keywords and influencers across Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook. Its funding history is the unusual part, and Ajani walked through it on the TechTO stage in June 2025. The company raised one round — about $365,000 in 2009, through the Toronto incubator he named on stage as Extreme Venture Partners, in an era when seed cheques were counted in the hundreds of thousands and Y Combinator was writing $15,000. It pivoted until it found product-market fit, and once the B2B revenue turned it profitable the founders concluded it was a good business but not a venture business: growing 40 to 80 percent a year was strong for a company and thin for a fund return. Rather than raise again they bought their seed investors out — about five years after founding, which Ajani dated on stage to roughly 2013 — and ran on customer revenue for the next decade. Muck Rack, itself founded in 2009 and also bootstrapped, had partnered with Keyhole since 2023 and acquired it outright in August 2024, its first acquisition.

Backers

One seed round of about $365,000 in 2009, through a Toronto incubator Ajani named on stage as Extreme Venture Partners. The founders bought those investors out roughly five years later and took no further outside money before the 2024 exit to Muck Rack.
