About
LAUFT sells access to workspace the way a hotel sells a room: pay-as-you-go, no contract, booked and unlocked from a phone. Graham Wong founded it in Toronto in 2017 after running an advertising agency and then consulting, when he kept finding himself with an hour between client meetings and nowhere professional to spend it — an experience he retold from the TechTO stage in 2024 as watching someone set up a second monitor in a Starbucks. The first location opened at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket in December 2018, and the network has since run sites across the Greater Toronto Area, including Vaughan, Burlington, Ajax, Castlefield, Dufferin, Don Mills and King at Church downtown. Wong describes the positioning as "the Starbucks of space with an Uber-like mobile experience" and the company as a technology platform as much as a landlord: the access control, the consistency of each site and the booking layer are the product. In September 2022 Public Services and Procurement Canada awarded LAUFT a contract to provide flexible workspace for federal public servants in the National Capital Area, for an initial three years with two possible one-year extensions — the company's largest to date at the time.
