Lumen5

Lumen5 is Vancouver software that turns written content — blog posts, articles, scripts — into short videos, automating the storyboarding and editing a video team would otherwise do. Michael Cheng, Christopher Bowal and Nigel Gutzmann founded it in 2015.

About

Lumen5 takes a piece of writing and builds a video from it: it picks out the beats, matches stock footage and music, and lays out the scenes, so a marketing team can publish video without a video team. Michael Cheng, Christopher Bowal and Nigel Gutzmann started it in Vancouver in 2015; Cheng had earlier co-founded the link tool Sniply. The company won the top prize at the 2019 New Ventures BC competition and says it has passed four million users. Cheng took the TechVancouver stage in May 2018 to argue that 'listen to your customers' is advice that works right up until it doesn't.

Backers

No institutional venture round is publicly documented; press describes the company as largely bootstrapped. It won the $105,000 first prize package at the 2019 New Ventures BC competition.
