About

Andre Charoo was an early employee at Uber and then at Hired, and noticed that both companies had Canadian founders. When he listed the other Canadian-founded companies that had reached billion-dollar scale — Slack, Instacart, Wish, PagerDuty, Cloudflare, Notion among them — he found no Canadian investor on any of their early cap tables, which he told TechTO was strange because unicorns elsewhere almost always carry a local VC. Maple VC is the answer to that: a fund waving the Canadian flag from Silicon Valley rather than from Canada, on the argument that the most ambitious Canadian founders leave early and a fund that follows them sees companies a Canada-only fund never does. The Hired founders funded the thesis rather than lose him, each putting in $50,000; the first $1.2 million fund made nine investments and six reached Series A or beyond. Inovia Capital became a limited partner in November 2019 and made Charoo a venture partner. The firm now invests across San Francisco, Canada, Harvard Business School and Korea.

Backers

A venture fund rather than an operating company. Charoo told TechTO the first fund came from the four founders of Hired at $50,000 each plus its board and investors, including Crosslink Capital, Jeff Clavier and Hans Tung; Inovia Capital became a limited partner in November 2019.

Quick answers

What does Maple VC invest in?

Seed-stage companies with Canadian founders, regardless of where the company is. The fund is deliberately based in San Francisco rather than Canada, on the view that the most ambitious Canadian founders move early and take the next generation of hires with them.

Who runs Maple VC?

Andre Charoo, its founder and managing partner, who was an early employee at both Uber and Hired. He is also a venture partner at Inovia Capital and co-chair of The C100.

How big are its funds?

The first fund was $1.2 million and made nine investments. The second closed at $16.5 million in December 2021. By the time of the TechTO talk in April 2021, Charoo said he had deployed $6 million across 13 companies.
