About

John Ruffolo founded OMERS Ventures in 2011 and ran it as chief executive, backing Shopify, Wattpad and Hootsuite, before leaving to start Maverix. The fund targets businesses around $100 million in revenue in healthcare, financial services, transportation and logistics, and retail — traditional sectors being reshaped by technology rather than software companies themselves. Ruffolo raised it against a stated $500-million target and neared a first close around $350 million with anchor commitments from the CAAT Pension Plan, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, BMO, CIBC and Mattamy Asset Management, plus family offices. He described the ambition as helping build "another 10 Shopifys". Ruffolo also co-founded the Council of Canadian Innovators and spoke at TechTO in 2020 on health tech during the pandemic and in 2021 on founding initiatives and persevering.
