About

Opendoor's premise is that selling a house should not take months. It buys homes directly, at a price it quotes upfront, then repairs and resells them — taking on inventory risk in exchange for removing the listing, showing and closing process from the seller's side.

Four founders started it in San Francisco in March 2014: Keith Rabois, Eric Wu, Ian Wong and JD Ross. Wong was chief technology officer for eight years and built the data organisation; he later co-founded Summation. Leadership has turned over recently — Shopify COO Kaz Nejatian was appointed CEO in September 2025, with Rabois and Wu returning to the board and Rabois as chairman.

Lucas Matheson became president effective 22 December 2025, overseeing corporate development, financial planning and, in the company's words, its "exploration of how blockchain technology and tokenization might create new pathways to homeownership." He had spent three years as country director and CEO of Coinbase Canada.

Backers

Publicly traded on Nasdaq as OPEN, following a 2020 SPAC merger. Earlier private investors included Keith Rabois's own Khosla Ventures connection and a series of venture rounds; the current register is public-market.
