About

Ownr handles the administrative layer under a new Canadian business. It registers sole proprietorships, files incorporations federally and provincially, generates the contracts and employment agreements a young company needs, and keeps the corporate records and government filings up to date afterwards. It was built inside RBC Ventures, the Royal Bank's venture-building arm, and launched in 2017. In September 2020 it acquired Founded Technologies, a legal tech platform started in 2017 by lawyers Shane Murphy, Derek Hopfner and Travis Houlette, and folded its incorporation, equity management and agreement automation into the Ownr product; terms were not disclosed and Founded became wholly owned by RBC Ventures. Murphy joined as COO and later became CEO, stepping down in 2026. He described the product on the TechTO stage in October 2021 as helping small businesses and startups get registered, get set up with the government, and then automate their ongoing legal needs — government filings, contracts, even equity management.

Backers

Wholly owned by RBC. Ownr was built inside RBC Ventures, the Royal Bank of Canada's venture arm, and is not independently funded.

Quick answers

What does Ownr do?

It registers and incorporates Canadian businesses online and then maintains the paperwork — government filings, contracts, minute book and share records. The pitch is that a founder can get legally set up and stay compliant without paying a law firm for each step.

Who owns Ownr?

RBC. Ownr was created inside RBC Ventures, the bank's venture-building arm, rather than raised as an independent startup, and it now sits under the RBCx umbrella.

What was the Founded acquisition?

In September 2020 Ownr acquired Founded Technologies, a legal tech platform for incorporations, equity management and legal agreements. Terms were not disclosed. Founded's technology was merged into Ownr and its co-founder Shane Murphy went on to run the business.
