About

Paays Financial Technologies started as a lending platform: on TechTO's TravelTechTO stage in May 2018, co-founder and CEO David Fry described a product that turned a large travel purchase into monthly payments and offered prime and non-prime borrowers financing at the point of sale. During the pandemic the company was building a customer-identity program for the travel market when Fry learned from an auto-industry contact that dealers were moving to digital transactions and becoming a fraud target; Paays built a prototype, talked to dealers and lenders, and integrated with the RouteOne financing platform (Canadian Auto Dealer, 2022-08-05). It launched ID Verifier in October 2022, document, face-match and liveness checks plus device, email and credit-bureau anti-fraud signals, citing roughly $1 billion a year of auto-financing fraud in Canada. By 2026 the company says 600+ dealerships are on its network and that each check draws on a shared pool that flags fraud a single check would miss.

Quick answers

What does Paays do?

It verifies car buyers for dealerships and lenders, combining identity, income and anti-money-laundering checks on one platform, with a shared network that flags fraud a single check might miss (paays.com, 2026). It launched ID Verifier in October 2022.

Who founded Paays?

David Fry, a former Deutsche Bank Canada global-markets head and hedge-fund co-founder. The company's own site dates the founding to 2018; Fry was already on the TechTO stage as co-founder and CEO in May 2018.

How did Paays end up in auto finance?

It began as an instalment-financing platform for travel and e-commerce purchases. While building a customer-identity program for travel during the pandemic, Fry learned the auto industry was going digital and attracting fraud, built a prototype, and integrated with RouteOne (Canadian Auto Dealer, 2022-08-05).
