Pippen's founders built a family medicine clinic before they built software. In 2018 they bought a space in Toronto's Beaches neighbourhood, fitted it out with limited funds, and set out to make somewhere doctors actually wanted to work — Kadhim-Saleh being a family physician who had seen the alternative. It worked, and then it didn't: Aglipay describes losing her co-founder, whom she later married, to what she calls paperwork, a nebulous word for the millions of steps a single clinical task takes. On a road trip after an academic conference they concluded that family medicine needed something structural, and large language models were becoming capable enough to build it. Aglipay is an epidemiologist by training, and the company's pitch leans on that: an evidence-based approach to AI in family medicine, with privacy treated as a competitive moat and experiments rather than guesses about what actually fits a clinic's workflow.
