About

Plooto started life as a Bitcoin-based payment product and pivoted away from it within a year. Co-founder Hamed Abbasi told the FintechTO stage in November 2017 that blockchain settlement was no faster once money had to move in and out of a bank, that regulatory setup across regions was hard, and that customers simply wanted to get paid quickly — so the team removed Bitcoin and kept the payments business. It now sells accounts payable and receivable automation to Canadian SMBs and their accountants and bookkeepers.

Quick answers

What does Plooto do?

It automates business payments — accounts payable and accounts receivable — for small and mid-sized companies, connecting to their existing bank so they can stop writing cheques and sending wires.

Why did Plooto drop blockchain?

Hamed Abbasi said on the TechTO stage that adoption was limited, settlement was no faster once funds moved through banks, and regulatory setup was difficult across regions. The team removed Bitcoin roughly six or seven months in and kept the payments product.

Where did the name come from?

Abbasi told the audience it comes from Plutus, the Greek god of wealth, spelled differently so it would not read as Greek.
