About
PMC-Sierra designed semiconductors and software for storage, optical and mobile networking. The business began as a division of Sierra Semiconductor, moved its headquarters to Burnaby, British Columbia, and in 1997 overtook its parent to the point that the whole company took the PMC-Sierra name. It became one of the anchor employers of the Vancouver-area technology scene and a training ground for people who went on to found and fund BC startups — Colin Harris, who ran engineering there, was on TechVancouver's July 2019 panel on navigating the local ecosystem. In late 2015 Microsemi agreed to acquire PMC-Sierra for about US$2.5 billion, a day after Skyworks abandoned its own US$2-billion bid; the deal closed in January 2016.
