Prelude

Prelude is the cybersecurity company Spencer Thompson co-founded in 2020 after building the career-assessment platform Sokanu. It runs safe simulated attacks against a company's own systems to answer one question — are we vulnerable to this? It now trades as Origin, an endpoint observability platform.

About

Prelude's premise is that most security tooling tells you what could go wrong in general and not what is true of your systems today. Its product runs continuous, safe simulations of specific threats against a company's own endpoints and reports whether the defence actually holds, which turns a threat advisory into a testable claim. The company raised $24M in April 2022 to build that out, and Thompson has described total funding above US$30M since. It has since rebranded: preludesecurity.com now redirects to Origin, which describes itself as endpoint AI observability for the agent workforce and tells existing Prelude Monitor customers that the product, team and contacts are unchanged. Thompson's earlier company was Sokanu, which he started in Vancouver in 2012 at nineteen and built into CareerExplorer, reaching more than ten million users a year before Penn Foster acquired it in March 2021.

Quick answers

What does Prelude do?

It runs safe, simulated attacks against a company's own systems on a continuous basis, so a security team can answer whether it is actually vulnerable to a specific threat rather than whether the threat exists.

Is it still called Prelude?

Its own site now says otherwise: preludesecurity.com redirects to Origin, which describes itself as an endpoint AI observability platform and tells existing Prelude Monitor customers that the product, team and contacts are unchanged. This directory still files it under Prelude, the name it carries elsewhere on the site.

Who founded it?

Spencer Thompson, its chief executive, in 2020. He earlier founded Sokanu in Vancouver at nineteen and built it into CareerExplorer, which Penn Foster acquired in March 2021.

Who from Prelude is in this directory?

Spencer Thompson, its co-founder and chief executive, who presented at TechVancouver in February 2016 on why a company exists — then running Sokanu.
