About
Royal Bank of Canada operates in five business segments — personal and commercial banking, wealth management, insurance, investor services, and capital markets — for 17 million clients, with more than 97,000 full- and part-time employees. It is listed as RY on the TSX and NYSE and describes itself as among the largest banks in the world by market capitalisation. The bank began as the Merchants' Bank of Halifax, incorporated in 1869, and took the name The Royal Bank of Canada in 1901. Its separate technology-banking arm, RBCx, launched in 2021 and has its own page here. RBC has appeared on the TechTO stage twice, both times through people rather than product: Alan Depencier, then chief marketing officer for personal and commercial banking and insurance, spoke at MarketingTO in November 2017 on choosing long-game brand-building over short-term tactics; and Adijat Akinsipe, director of enterprise technology and digital recruitment, spoke at TechTO Talent in July 2020 on building a technology career inside a large enterprise. Both titles are era-correct for those talks.
Backers
Publicly traded as RY on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges; not venture-backed.

Quick answers
What is RBC?
Royal Bank of Canada — Canada's largest bank, serving 17 million clients across Canada, the U.S. and 27 other countries through five segments: personal and commercial banking, wealth management, insurance, investor services and capital markets. It trades as RY on the TSX and NYSE.
When was RBC founded?
RBC's own history pages date the institution to a merchants' bank in Halifax: it operated as the Merchants Bank from 1864 and was incorporated as the Merchants' Bank of Halifax under an act assented to on 22 June 1869. It became The Royal Bank of Canada on 2 January 1901.
How big is RBC?
More than 97,000 full- and part-time employees and 17 million clients, by the bank's own account. RBC describes itself as among the largest banks in the world based on market capitalisation.
What has RBC presented at TechTO?
Two talks about working at scale rather than about products. Alan Depencier, then CMO for personal and commercial banking and insurance, spoke at MarketingTO in November 2017 on the long game versus the short game in marketing. Adijat Akinsipe, director of enterprise technology and digital recruitment, spoke at TechTO Talent in July 2020 on building a technology career inside a large enterprise.
Is RBCx the same as RBC?
RBCx is RBC's platform for technology companies, launched in June 2021, combining the bank's innovation banking group with its venture arm. It is a distinct brand with its own page in this directory; the two RBC speakers here worked in the bank itself, not in RBCx.
